Sleepout 2020 SmallestOur Annual Sponsored Sleepout

took place on Sat 11 January to 8am Sun 12 January 2020
St. Mary’s Church - Devizes

Armed with sleeping bags, mats and thermal underwear, 16 participants arrived at St Mary’s, Devizes oldest church, for the annual Sleep Out event with an ambitious plan to double the amount raised last year of £1,390. Having totted up the numbers, it looks like we will smash through that goal, with pledges of £4,000.

Through their JustGiving page, two local 9 year old girls and a 14 year old raised £1050. Local Accountancy firm David Owen, who have made Opendoors their charity for 2020, raised £1800 on the night through two participants.

We are very grateful to Walter Rose for generously supplying sausages and bacon for breakfast, the remainder of which will be used for many meals at the shelter, together with MC Event Loos who kindly lent a very clean portaloo complete with toilet paper.

John Saunders, Chair of Trustees from Devizes Opendoors said, ‘A key event in our calendar, we have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity. The Sleep Out represents critical funding for us and we are very grateful to all our participants for braving the elements as well as St Mary’s Church, Walter Rose & Son and MC Event Loos for supporting us.’

The Sleep Out began at 8pm on Saturday, 11 January and finished at 8am on Sunday 12 January. The average temperature was 4 degree C. Five intrepid sleepers set up outside braving the heavy rain and gusty winds. Sleepers were greeted with tea and coffee, which was followed by a screening of Trading Places and culminated with bowl of warm and roll before everyone bedded down. Three organisers took 2 hour slots to stand watch and conducted hourly patrols. At 7am, the camping stove was lit and sleepers awoke to the very welcome smell of Walter Rose sausages and bacon frying. The mood was very friendly although perhaps unsurprisingly a little subdued by the morning and all admired the beautiful architecture of historic St Mary’s Church, the oldest church in Devizes.

In 2019, the Sleep Out raised £1,390 representing 5% of the annual budget and the goal this year was to raise £2600 which would have been 10%. As it stands, the night has raised just over 15% which represents nearly two months of Opendoors running costs.

The deadline for all donations is 1st February 2020 either through our JustGiving page www.justgiving/devizes-opendoors or direct to St John’s post box marked Devizes Opendoors Sleep Out.
