Kennet Action for Single Homeless was setup in the early 1993 after running "soup kitchen" services to the rough sleepers in the old Devizes Cattle Market.
The original drop-in centre was in Northgate Street before moving to the Cromwell Rooms in Station Road. In 2002 KASH amalgamated with Alabaré Christian Care Centres.
It was one of three projects for homeless people in Devizes run by the Alabaré.
After six years, funding for that project became diminished and the property unsafe, so a new home was sought.
Faced with closure the drop-in centre moved to St James’s Parish Rooms in Victoria Road and re-branded as Devizes Opendoor (no 's'). However, it became apparent that the facilities were not suitable for the Guests so the project re-located to the newly refurbished St John's Parish Rooms in Long Street which now had showers. This continued successfully until 2017 when it became necessary to put the organisation on a more secure footing. Devizes Opendoors was registered as a Charity and started to look for more suitable premises that could be used exclusively and more regularly. Negotiations with St James' Church began during the Covid-19 Lockdown period to take over the now redundant Southbroom Parish Centre.
The Parish Rooms were extensively re-purposed with the conversion of office space, addition of storage, installation of a shower and modernisation of lighting. September 2021 saw our Guests being able to use the Centre although, due to Covid restrictions, we have been unable to have an official "opening ceremony".
